CME Shrinks Equity Futures Again as Record Indices Raise Entry Costs

CME Group plans to introduce E-nano futures on four major U.S. equity indices—the S&P 500, Nasdaq-100, Russell 2000 and Dow Jones Industrial Average—on 24 August, pending regulatory review. The new contracts will be one-tenth the size of Micro E-mini futures, and one-hundredth the size of standard E-mini contracts, giving traders finer position sizing as record-high index levels make existing futures more expensive to access. The launch is designed to broaden retail and active-trader participation while preserving margin offsets and near-continuous trading. CME is not replacing its Micro E-minis; instead, it is adding another tier to a product family that has already seen heavy use, with about 4.5 billion Micro E-minis traded since 2019. The move highlights continued demand for smaller, more accessible index exposure and could support further trading activity across CME’s equity-index complex.
