Amazon Issues Developer Guidelines Discouraging Artificial Intelligence 'Tokenmaxxing'

Amazon has published updated guidelines directing software engineers to prioritize business outcomes and customer impact over raw artificial intelligence adoption metrics. The internal memo, authored by Vice President and Distinguished Engineer Terk Terkowitz, warns against 'tokenmaxxing' and notes that measuring token consumption or lines of code is deeply flawed. The guidance follows earlier internal tracking experiments, including a token leaderboard shut down in May after employees inflated consumption. While Amazon confirmed it has not instituted hard caps on token usage, managers are now instructed to examine teams in the top and bottom 10% of AI adoption to ensure productivity gains.
