ECB Survey Shows Eurozone Loan Demand Plunged in Q3 as Credit Standards Tightened

Eurozone credit conditions deteriorated significantly in the third quarter as borrowing demand tumbled and banks tightened lending standards, according to the European Central Bank's Bank Lending Survey. A net 27% of lenders reported declining housing loan demand, down sharply from a 15% drop in the second quarter and worse than the anticipated 12% decline. Corporate loan demand fell by a net 6%, while standards tightened by a net 9% for corporate loans and 14% for consumer credit. Lenders expect further tightening in the fourth quarter, complicating the monetary policy outlook as markets price high odds of a November pause.
