Ethereum Researchers Propose EIP-8453 to Cut Transaction Finality to Four Minutes

Ethereum researchers have introduced an Ethereum Improvement Proposal, EIP-8453, to cut transaction finality from approximately 16 minutes to roughly four minutes. The proposal decouples validator block-selection head votes from finality proofs, assigning head votes to a committee of around 512 validators per slot while requiring a two-thirds supermajority of active stake for finality. This fourfold reduction aims to lower idle transit capital for $1 million per hour bridge services from $267,000 to approximately $67,000. It also lays groundwork for future quantum-resistant cryptographic upgrades. The draft currently has no formal activation timeline.
