Experts Debate Bitcoin Quantum Vulnerability as 2.6 Million BTC Face Future Risk

Cryptocurrency security experts are debating the timeline for Bitcoin's vulnerability to quantum computing, known as 'Q-Day'. While Casa Chief Security Officer Jameson Lopp maintains quantum threats are not immediate, researcher Stefano Gogioso warns Q-Day could arrive by the early-to-mid 2030s. Cracking Bitcoin requires under 500,000 qubits, compared to current 105-qubit chips like Google's Willow. Chaincode Labs estimates a network-wide migration could take 5 to 15 years, raising concerns as approximately 2.6 million BTC—worth about $207 billion, or 13% of supply—remain in exposed legacy addresses.
