Experts Warn Bitcoin Faces Urgent Quantum Risks as Adversaries Stockpile Data

On May 30, security researchers escalated warnings that Bitcoin's quantum vulnerability has become more pressing, citing a March 2026 Google paper that reduced the qubit requirement to break secp256k1 to roughly 1,200 logical qubits. The alert follows Glassnode's May 28 report flagging over 6 million BTC in legacy addresses and Quantus's May 29 estimate that 2.3–3.7 million coins cannot migrate, placing $450–500 billion at immediate “harvest now, decrypt later” risk. Nation-state data stockpiling since October 2025 and slow Bitcoin governance now raise the prospect of accelerated institutional outflows and a capital shift toward quantum-resistant chains.
