French October Inflation Accelerates to 3.4% Above Forecasts, Intensifying ECB Policy Dilemma

France's preliminary consumer price inflation climbed to 3.4% year-over-year in October, exceeding consensus forecasts of 3.2% and up from 3.1% in September. On a monthly basis, CPI rose 0.4%, beating expectations of a 0.2% increase and reversing September's 0.3% decline. The harmonized index of consumer prices (HICP) also topped forecasts, rising 3.8% annually compared to 3.6% expected. Price pressures were driven primarily by energy costs, which jumped to 24.1% year-over-year, while services inflation climbed to 2.7%. The unexpected acceleration intensifies stagflationary concerns and complicates future monetary policy decisions for the European Central Bank.
