Google to Turn Off AI Tools by Default for K-12 Student Accounts

Google will disable artificial intelligence tools by default for K-12 school accounts starting next year, giving administrators opt-in control over tools like the Gemini chatbot and AI search features. However, completely restricting AI will simultaneously cut off student access to Google Search entirely because features like AI Overviews are inseparable from the search engine. The policy shift follows scrutiny over generative AI's impact on child development and academic integrity, including an investigative report and an active bipartisan U.S. Senate inquiry. Google also introduced Guided Learning, an AI tutoring tool designed to explain concepts rather than provide direct answers.
