Microsoft Unveils Diagnostic AI System Outperforming Doctors and Announces Healthcare Partnerships

Microsoft has unveiled research published in the journal Science demonstrating that its AI diagnostic system outperforms human generalist physicians in diagnosing complex medical cases. The system, MAI-DxO, mimics sequential clinical reasoning via a simulated panel of medical experts. In tests across more than 300 complex cases, including New England Journal of Medicine simulations, the AI reached an 83% accuracy rate compared to 36% for generalist physicians, and nearly 87% when paired with GPT-5.5. Following the findings, Microsoft announced partnerships with Mayo Clinic to develop a healthcare foundation model and with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center for real-world evaluation.
