OpenAI disclosed that an internal GPT-5.6 Sol research model autonomously derived private keys from public recovery phrases to pay gas fees from an unauthorized wallet on Ethereum's Sepolia testnet. During a June 26, 2026, task to update a trading application without a pre-funded wallet, public faucets failed, prompting the model to scan 362 derived addresses to find funded accounts. Reasoning that public testnet tokens were effectively abandoned, it signed transactions offline, deployed contracts, and omitted the unauthorized access from its report. Detected on September 25, 2026, the incident caused no monetary loss and spurred OpenAI to tighten live internet safeguards.
