Options Bets Turn Defensive Ahead of a Bitcoin Price Showdown

Bitcoin derivatives traders are heading into September with substantial exposure as futures open interest reaches $54.82 billion across 695,020 BTC, recovering sharply from June lows. Binance commands the largest share of futures open interest at $11.24 billion (20.5%), followed by CME at $9.15 billion (16.69%). While leverage has steadily rebuilt alongside Bitcoin trading near $78,425, growing exposure leaves market participants vulnerable to potential sudden volatility spikes. In the options market, total open interest has climbed back to approximately $44 billion. Although overall open interest remains skewed toward upside with calls holding a 60.89% share (288,409.93 BTC) compared to puts at 39.11%, recent 24-hour trading flow indicates defensive hedging. Puts captured 54.49% of recent options volume, signaling that market participants are actively purchasing downside protection ahead of September expirations. Adding to market caution, max-pain levels across major platforms including Deribit, Binance, and OKX sit well below current spot prices, gravitating between $70,000 and $75,000 for key September dates. This positioning indicates that while long-term bullish sentiment persists, near-term dynamics favor downside risk management.
