Surging Tanker Freight Rates Disrupt Global Oil Shipments and Fuel Inflation Pressures

Soaring global tanker rates and vessel shortages driven by Middle East security risks are stranding heavy crude in the Americas and exacerbating global consumer price inflation. Chartering a supertanker from the U.S. to Japan has reached $81 million ($40.50 per barrel), compared to an average of $9.1 million in 2025. Freight rates now comprise over 40% of the overall cost of crude, up from 7% last year. These shipping bottlenecks have stranded crude supply across North and South America, driving down regional heavy grades by approximately $10 per barrel while lifting retail energy costs globally.
