Swiss Regulator FINMA Approves Nation's First Retail Spot Bitcoin ETF

Switzerland's Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA) has approved the country's first retail spot Bitcoin exchange-traded fund. The new vehicle directly holds Bitcoin and is classified as an "other fund for alternative investments." To permit the single-asset structure, FINMA granted an exemption from standard fund risk-diversification rules, citing Bitcoin's established track record and high trading volume. The decision expands retail access beyond prior frameworks, which had permitted debt-structured ETPs since 2019 and qualified-investor funds since 2021. Issuers must adhere to strict custody, operational, and suitability rules under Swiss regulations.
