US September Import and Export Prices Surge Past Forecasts, Heightening Inflation Pressures

U.S. import prices climbed 1.1% month-over-month in September, topping forecasts that ranged between 0.6% and 0.8%, according to Labor Department data. Export prices surged 2.2% during the same month, outpacing expectations of 0.9% to 1.0%. The annual import price rate accelerated to 8.1% from 7.0%. These stronger-than-projected trade figures follow earlier hot inflation reports, including a 3.7% annual rise in headline CPI and a 1.3% monthly jump in PPI. The persistent pricing gains across trade metrics highlight stubborn cross-border inflation, complicating Federal Reserve interest rate projections and weighing on broader risk sentiment.
