Vitalik Buterin and Cryptographers Defend Ethereum's Hash-Based Quantum Security Against a16z Proposal

Ethereum cofounder Vitalik Buterin and Zcash cofounder Eli Ben Sasson have defended Ethereum's hash-based cryptographic architecture against alternative proposals. The debate follows a16z crypto's unveiling of Aerie, a lattice-based signature aggregation system that aggregated 32,768 Falcon signatures in 0.65 seconds, outperforming Ethereum's leanVM by up to 60 times. a16z argued hash-based approaches introduce bug surfaces and lack native privacy capabilities. In response, Ben Sasson warned lattice mathematical structures could be vulnerable to AI-driven attacks, while Buterin supported hash-based signatures and STARK aggregation as the network targets quantum resistance across consensus and execution layers by December 2029.
